California Cultures: Changing Teaching, Teaching Change
Welcome from the Conference Chair
October 11-13, 2007
The Doubletree Hotel
Burlingame, California
Welcome to the ECCTYC 2007 Conference: California Cultures: Changing Teaching, Teaching Change. ECCTYC invites you to come to Burlingame to rejuvenate, connect with colleagues from throughout the state, and take part in the scholarly discussions surrounding this year’s theme. Our 2007 conference celebrates the rich diversity of culture within our state. It also highlights emerging pedagogies that are transforming our classrooms. From the northern to the central to the southern regions of California, participants will have the chance to share their regional personalities as well as consider the cultures of their colleges, student populations, and classrooms.
California Cultures: Changing Teaching, Teaching Change will include a variety of panels, workshops, and roundtable discussions that address developments in higher education today as well as showcase teaching techniques, technology, and innovations. As with all of our past conferences, we welcome any topic of interest to community college English teachers. Sample topics from our proposal form include Conducting Classroom Research, Peer Revision, Arts in The Composition Classroom, and Academic Literacy. The presentations and break-out sessions will provide an opportunity to collaborate, get to know fellow colleagues, and learn about new research in our profession. If you are interested in presenting, our proposal form is available online and can be submitted directly to our Program Chairs, Judie Hinman and Susan Cooper.

This year’s location, the Doubletree Hotel in Burlingame, provides a relaxing retreat for our conference. With its proximity to the San Francisco Airport/BART Station, the Burlingame location makes travel very convenient. The Doubletree’s free shuttle runs every 15 minutes from the hotel to the airport and can be used to plan trips into the city via BART. Be sure to make your reservations before September 19th to take advantage of the special ECCTYC conference rate of $119 single/double per night.
For continued consideration of culture, take BART into San Francisco to experience the local character, countercultures, and diversity of individual neighborhoods. North Beach, home to San Francisco’s Little Italy and the Beat Generation, offers an eclectic mix of coffee houses, bookstores, music venues, and restaurants. Nearby Chinatown offers a journey of Asia past and present. Public murals inspired by the Chicano arts movement of the 60’s can be found in the Mission District, home to the Latino community. For more cultural excursion suggestions, look for the local attractions guide available at the registration table.
Speakers for ECCTYC’S 2007 conference will be announced shortly. We will be posting updates and announcements frequently to our website. If you have any further questions about our conference, don’t hesitate to send me an email. I look forward to seeing you in Burlingame!
