ECCTYC 2009 Guest Speakers
David Borofka

David Borofka’s stories have earned such awards as Missouri Review’s Editors’ Prize, Carolina Quarterly’s Charles B. Wood Award for Distinguished Writing, and the Emerging Writers Network Short Fiction Prize. His collection, Hints of His Mortality, won the 1996 Iowa Short Fiction Award, and his novel, The Island, was published by MacMurray & Beck, portions of which appeared in Gettysburg Review and Shenandoah. New work has recently appeared in Image, Southern Review, Manoa, and Glimmer Train. His story "The Secret Life of Engineers" won the most recent Emerging Writers Network short fiction contest and can be found at Storyglossia. He also teaches composition, literature, and creative writing at Reedley College in Reedley, California and fiction writing for the Writers' Program at UCLA Extension, where he was named the 2008 instructor of the year for online creative writing.
Andrew Lam

Andrew Lam is a syndicated writer and an editor with New America Media, a short story writer, and a regular commentator on NPR's All Things Considered. He co-founded New California Media, an association of 400 ethnic media organizations in California. His essays have appeared in dozens of newspapers across the country, including The New York Times, The L.A. Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Baltimore Sun, The Atlanta Journal, and The Chicago Tribune. He has also written essays for magazines like Mother Jones, The Nation, San Francisco Focus, Proult Journal, In Context, and Earth Island Journal. Lam’s new book, Perfume Dreams: Reflections On The Vietnamese Diaspora (Heyday Books), recently won the Pen American "Beyond the Margins" Award. Many literary journals publish his short stories, including: Manoa Journal, Crab Orchard Review, Nimrod International, Michigan Quarterly West, Zyzzyva, Transfer Magazine, and many others. Lam's awards include the Society of Professional Journalists' Outstanding Young Journalist Award (1993), The Media Alliance Meritorious award (1994), The World Affairs Council's Excellence in International Journalism Award (1992), the Rockefeller Fellowship at UCLA (1992), and the Asian American Journalists Association National Award (1993 and 1995).
Mahogany L. Browne

Mahogany L. Browne, a Cave Canem Fellow, is the Editor of His Rib: Stories, Poems & Essays by HER & Barbershop Chronicles, and authored two books Unlikely & Other Sorts. Mahogany has released four LPs including the international hit Black Secret Soul and the newest live album Sheroshima. As co-founder of the Off Broadway poetry production, Jam On It, and co-producer of NYC’s 1st Performance Poetry Festival: SoundBites Poetry Festival, Mahogany bridges the gap between lyrical poets and literary emcee. Her freelance journalism can be found in magazines KING, XXL, The Source, Canada's The Word and UK's MOBO. She also facilitates performance poetry and writing workshops throughout the country, focusing on women empowerment and youth mentoring. She recently purchased PoetCD.Com, an on-line marketing and distribution company for poets and is the host and curator at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe.
